ill iterate: Open Letter: Elevening Friday →
iamilliterate: Hello friends. Many of you know I have a penchant for sporadic blasts of pseudo-news. It’s called a penchant, because I keep doing it; sporadic because I do it so inconsistently, and pseudo-news, because real news isn’t delivered via blog posts from people like me (e.g. SMOKING hot). This is my…

Cocorosie = Freak Folk?
If this is Freak Folk, then I’m a fan of Freak Folk. I’m several years late to the Cocorosie Freak Folk party, but I’m making up for lost time. I’m also just in time to catch them on tour. Now, it’s just a matter of deciding on the Chicago or Seattle show. Thanks KEXP for introducing me.

Girl Game (can women learn the "art" of the pick... →
A world-famous pickup artist tried to teach single women to attract decent guys in S.F. It was harder than he thought. I’ve been hit on by girls before. I’m always surprised when it happens. Not because I buy into the notion that women shouldn’t hit on guys (I personally welcome it), but because it’s such a rare occurrence. I’ll have to make a mental note of my...

Experiments in Lifestyle Design #1
De-Facebook That’s right friends, I’m weaning myself off the largest source of empty-calories in my information diet and that means de-facebooking. Why? Because the number of times facebook.com manifests itself on my computer screen or phone without my knowledge creeps me out. The last time I auto-piloted to facebook.com, I paused and asked myself: “Is finding out that...

Sounds of Summer?
It’s July 8th and the high temperatures are in the mid to upper 60s. Nothing screams “SUMMER” like sweater weather. But when it’s -10 below zero and 30 degrees begins to sound warm; I’ll get nostalgic about this 65 degree July day and the soundtrack to those memories will be supplied these bands. Pre - Teenage Lakes - Pre-space Death Sentence: PANDA! - Island...

Dark Lord Day 2009
Is any beer worth standing in line for four hours? Yes, but not just “any beer.” Fortunately, 3 Floyds Dark Lord Russian Imperial Stout is not “any beer.” As I stood in line with thousands of people that traveled from as far away as Germany, the rational part of me wondered how any reasonable person could justify standing in line for beer. But after my first taste of Dark...

Dark Lord Day 2009 Eve
Tomorrow I attend my first Dark Lord Day event in Munster, IN to celebrate the release of Three Floyd’s Dark Lord Russian Imperial Stout. I’ve never had this rare Three Floyds brew, but if it lives up to the legendary tales and the quality of other Floyd’s beers, I’m in for a huge treat. Come on Saturday morning! From Beer

Why I Like Real Beer
Updated May 6th, 2009: Pardon my snobbery. I didn’t realize how snobby and judgemental this entry is. Yikes! While I’ve become passionate about craft beer and support craft brewers, to call it “real beer” is pure snobbery on my part and that’s the last thing craft beer’s about. Not cool. Now I can get back to sharing the things I enjoy - in a...

Meeting Ken Tanaka
This entry is overdue! Watch Ken take us on a tour of his show. You can also watch me blink like crazy for a few seconds at the 5:02 mark. Here’s a short video response I made to thank Ken and to document my two seconds of YouTube fame. Sounds provided by Buffallo Daughter.

Last Day - LA Part III
Sunday My last day in LA consisted of breakfast, packing, returning my rental car, shuttle to LAX, and catching a plane to Phoenix. I’ll spare you the details, because it’s not very interesting. I do have one piece of advice though. If you need to buy souvenirs, buy them at Walmart. I bought an overpriced shot glass in a LAX gift shop and there was no alcohol in it. Saran Wrapping LA...

The Main Event - LA Part II
Saturday Saturday was the big day. I saw the Pacific Ocean, took the Giant Robot tour, went to the Ken Tanaka show at Billy Shire Fine Arts, checked out the Scion/Giant Robot Paperpushers show, and had a drink at Father’s Office. As an added bonus, I had time for my first In-N-Out Burger. If you’d like to see more photos, follow the links. I didn’t have time to dip a toe in the...

Back on Central Time - LA Part I
Los Angeles was as much as fun as I hoped. I was only there for a few days, but I managed to accomplish and experience a lot. Rather than one long post, I’ll post for each day I was there. (Follow the links to see more photos.) Great Friday Why I like the window seat. On the way to LAX. From Sights After I picked up my rental car, I headed to Pasadena for lunch with Emmy. On the way, I...

LA Bound
I’m headed off to LA for the weekend. I’m pretty excited as this’ll be my first trip out West. I get to see some old friends, some art, maybe meet a few artists, and I get to check off a few items off of my “Places to Visit” list. Places to Visit: Los Angeles Giant Robot 1 Giant Robot 2 GR Eats (I’ll check them off when I get back.) The trip was...

Ustreaming and Tweeting to the Top of Amazon
On March 23rd, Ramit Sethi, founder of iwillteachyoutoberich.com, launched his book, “I Will Teach You To Be Rich.” What was special about this launch was the way he used social media to get people involved to help spread the word about his book’s release. For most of the day, Ramit broadcasted live from his site using Ustream.tv. He answered viewers’ personal finance...

Ben Casnocha: When Looking for Smart, Attractive... →
I like Ben’s thought on dating sites including two photo boxes for a recent photo and a photo at 15 years old. The only problem I have with his theory is that most women would appear as nerdy and unattractive at 15 years old. But you may be able to gauge sense of humor and confidence level by the type of photo the member posts. I’d put a photo of myself wearing cut-off jeans shorts and...

I’m not sure how much fame I’ve achieved from my participation in Giant Robot’s Eight Words Project, but that wasn’t the point. I’ve been meaning to subscribe to GR for a while (I’m sure I’ve got a post-it note laying around with “subscribe to GR” scribbled on it), but taking part in the project was the nudge that I needed to subscribe....

Tokyo! March 13th @ Music Box Theatre Chicago
Friday the 13th superstitions, pot holes, and over-priced parking won’t stop me from catching Tokyo! on the big screen. I was even considering a trip to New York or a flight to California to watch this, but those plans are on hold as the film will be making a stop at the Music Box Theatre. Check out the trailer below:

Note to Self: Dream
I’m a huge fan of Post-it notes. I love their simplicity, versatility, and visibility. I use them to manage shopping and to-do lists. They don’t require batteries, an Internet connection, or special wires to be useful. All you need is a pen and something note-worthy. They’re the perfect for lo-tech solution for making “Notes to Self.” I’m also a huge fan of...

Giant Robot @ Club Mumble
Giant Robot is the name of a zine - turned magazine - started by Eric Nakamura and Martin Wong. While the magazine focuses on Asian pop culture, it’s much more than that. Their magazine is like the cool kid that everyone got along with in school. The kid with all the cool toys, awesome taste in music, movies, art, and connections that somehow didn’t turn grow up to be a pretentious...

Niece-sitting
This last weekend I had the pleasure of babysitting my niece. This was my first babysitting gig and I had no real concerns - except for changing diapers. I got off easy though and passed the practical exam with flying colors and can now add “diaper changing” to the skills portion of my resume. I know my niece loves me as she saved anything especially potent for her daddy. I learned...

Banks refer to overdraft and ATM fees as “non-interest income.” I like to refer to said fees as “sucker fees.” I’m glad consumers are catching on. Too bad it’s taken a horrible economy to wake people up.
